ABOUT JAMESTAN ENGINEERING

What is sheet metal welding fabrication?

Sheet metal fabrication can be defined as the process of turning flat sheets of aluminium into metal structures and other products like machines and metal spare parts. It can, therefore, be defined as a value-added process, and it takes advantage of the fact that metal sheets can be cut, bent, and stretched into a wide variety of shapes. It involves processes like cutting, punching, folding, and assembling.

The cutting is done by sawing, shearing, or chiselling. This can be done with manual and powered variants. Bending is done by hammering or using tube benders while assembling is done by welding or bonding using adhesives, threaded fasteners, or riveting.

In the process of metal sheet fabrication, tools like band saws and chop saws are used. The tools help to ensure that the cutting process is even throughout the metal sheets. In some cases, cutting torches are used to cut through large sections of metal sheets. The torches require the least amount of effort compared to the other tools mentioned above. Lasers also work the same way as torches. To ease the fabrication process, press brakes are used. They help to create sharp bends and angles when cutting through the metals.

Raw materials that are used in the sheet metal fabrication process include a metal plate, welding rods or wires, casting, and expanded metal.

What is the welding fabrication process?

The welding fabrication process involves joining metals and thermoplastic materials by using heat. The heat melts all the parts together. After they are joined, they are then cooled down, causing fusion. Filter material is used on the joints to form a pool of molten material (often known as a weld pool). The pool cools to form a joint, which sometimes is stronger than the base material (also known as the parent metal).

The strength of the joint depends on the weld configuration. The different kinds of good configurations include butt, full penetration, and fillet, among others. The process also required a form of a shield. The shield protects the filler or melted metals from getting contaminated. In welding, oxidation is considered a form of contamination.

Energy is one of the main requirements in welding. The energy can either be electrical or chemical. Chemical energy comes in the form of a gas flame, while electrical energy comes in the form of electric arc, laser, beam electrons, or ultrasound. Friction is also a source of energy. Welding fabrication is mostly an industrial process. However, it can also be done in a wide range of environments like open air, underwater, and in outer space as well. Note that welding fabrication is a dangerous process that could result in burns, visual damage, and electric shock. Therefore, a lot of care needs to be taken, like wearing protective garments.

What is the tooling assembly?

Tooling is the process through which tools that are used to manufacture parts and components are designed and engineered. There are several types of tooling. The most common ones are work holding tools like jigs and fixtures, cutting tools used for milling and grinding devices. The different types can range from small to large, depending on the items.

In simpler terms, tooling assembly can be defined as the process of designing and engineering all the tools that are required for the manufacture of parts or components. It can be broken down into a variety of sub-assembly mechanisms. Sub-assembly tooling is where simple technology methods are used for the precise location of semi-automated operations. Tooling assembly is an important part of the automobile production industry.

The cost of the tooling assembly is relatively high. However, the cost depends on a wide range of factors like the costs of CNC machining and precision cold forming. Other factors include the tolerance and rigidity of the manufactured parts because they impact the configuration of the tooling. The strength of the cutting tools also influences the ability to withstand the machining forces and volume.

Why use tooling assembly for your project?

Below are some of the main benefits of tooling assembly also referred to as tooling;

Quality- tooling assembly helps to ensure that the parts are all of the incredible quality. The tools that are manufactured in assembly and fabrication processes are used in a wide range of industries, which all require the best products. Note that the quality of the finished part and its properties affect the final product significantly.

Volume- one of the main benefits of tooling assembly is that it allows for the production of a large volume of tools in the fastest time possible. The speed and accuracy, however, depends on the precision and the characteristics of the tooling.

Cost- tooling assembly also helps to reduce the overall costs of production. It also helps to avoid issues with the quality of the parts, which would warrant the need for changes hence more expenses.

Easy planning- completing a project takes a lot of time, especially when plans are not properly made at the beginning. Tooling assembly helps to make the process flow easily because it reduces the amount of time it takes to manufacture parts.

What type of industries use assembly and fabrication?

Below are some of the main products that use assembly and fabrication;

Construction- In the construction industry, fabricated metals are used in the construction of structures that are used in both small and large building projects. For instance, fabricated metals are used to make the process of erecting skyscrapers easy. They also make the buildings stronger and resistant to fire.
Shipping- In the shipping industry, fabricated metals are used in the assembly of parts and as fasteners that hold different elements together. The industry is involved in the transfer of tons of fabricated metals annually. Therefore, the metals can be referred to as the driving force of the industry.

Manufacturing- In the manufacturing industry, fabricated metals are used in the assembly of hardware and hand tools. The metals are also used as hardware components on motherboards, monitors, and computer cases. Springs and wire products are also manufactured through the processes of assembly and fabricating. Auto repair industries also benefit.

HVAC- In the HVAC industry, assembly and fabrication are applied in the production of heating and cooling equipment like specialized ductwork and other HVAC accessories.

Farming- The farming industry also benefits from assembly and fabrication as it helps in the production of tractor pieces and metal works.
